Short answer

Sverige i fokus is the official study material for the citizenship test, produced by UHR together with Skolverket on behalf of the government. It is a free 48-page PDF on basic knowledge about Swedish society, and the test questions are based on its contents.

When UHR published the format of the citizenship test, it also published something more important: the source itself. Sverige i fokus is the official study material that the test questions are based on, produced by UHR together with Skolverket on behalf of the government. This article goes through what the material contains, where to find it and how to study from it in a smart way.

First, the most important thing: the material is free. You download it at uhr.se/medborgarskapsprovet, where there are also recorded audio files chapter by chapter if you would rather listen than read.

An honest aside before we go on: yes, UHR’s material has almost the same name as us. We were called Sverige i Fokus before UHR published its book, and today we are called SverigeFokus. We are an independent study material, not an authority, and this is UHR’s book we are writing about, not ours.

What Sverige i fokus contains

The material is a 48-page PDF titled “Sverige i fokus. Utbildningsmaterial till medborgarskapsprov. Grundläggande kunskaper om det svenska samhället” (Sweden in focus: study material for the citizenship test, basic knowledge about Swedish society). The contents are divided into 13 subject areas plus an introduction. Here they are with their Swedish chapter titles, as they appear in the PDF:

  1. Inledning, the introduction
  2. Landet Sverige, the country of Sweden (geography, population, natural resources, climate)
  3. Sveriges demokratiska system, Sweden’s democratic system
  4. Så här styrs Sverige, how Sweden is governed (the state, regions, municipalities, the form of government)
  5. Politiska val och partier, political elections and parties
  6. Lag och rätt, law and justice (the fundamental laws, the justice system)
  7. Mediernas roll, the role of the media (free media, source criticism)
  8. Mänskliga rättigheter, human rights (equality, children’s rights, minorities, discrimination)
  9. Arbetsmarknad och privatekonomi, the labour market and personal finance
  10. Välfärdssamhället, the welfare society (taxes, who is responsible for what)
  11. Sveriges moderna historia, Sweden’s modern history
  12. Sverige och omvärlden, Sweden and the world
  13. En sekulär stat och ett mångreligiöst land, a secular state and a multi-religious country
  14. Traditioner och högtider, traditions and holidays

In other words, it is broad civic knowledge, not a language test. The test on 15 August was about 60 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, in Swedish and on paper, and every question should be answerable from this material.

How to study from the material

48 pages sounds like little, but the material is dense: names, years, concepts and structures on almost every page. Three things usually make the biggest difference:

Read actively, not passively. Reading through the PDF once gives recognition, not knowledge. Test yourself after each chapter. We have seen it in black and white in our anonymous test in the style of the exam (in Swedish, like the real test): most people manage the questions where you understand how society works, but far more fall down on questions about years and figures, even though everything is in the material.

Use the audio files. The chapters are recorded and available on uhr.se. Listening to a chapter on the bus and then doing practice questions on the same chapter at home is one of the easiest ways to get the revision done.

Practise in the test format. The real test is multiple-choice questions with four options, of which one is correct. UHR has published five sample questions that show the style. Train the same way: choose an answer, look at the key only afterwards, and read the explanation of why the other options are wrong. How to plan your practice in the weeks before the test is covered in the guide to practice tests.

What UHR is clear about

Two things are worth knowing. First: practice material from anyone other than UHR is not quality-checked by UHR. That applies to all apps, quizzes and books, ours included. Nobody outside UHR knows exactly what the test questions look like. Second: no questions from the August test have been published, and UHR’s own pages say nothing about publishing them, so do not count on practising with real past questions.

Get started

Download Sverige i fokus from uhr.se/medborgarskapsprovet, read one chapter at a time and test yourself right after. If you want to see where you stand now, our anonymous test in the style of the exam takes about five minutes, and afterwards you see how you do compared with everyone else.

Frequently asked questions

What is Sverige i fokus?

Sverige i fokus is the official study material for the citizenship test, produced by UHR together with Skolverket on behalf of the government. It is a free 48-page PDF on basic knowledge about Swedish society, and the test questions are based on its contents.

Where do I download Sverige i fokus?

The material is free at uhr.se/medborgarskapsprovet. There you will find both the PDF and recorded audio files chapter by chapter, so you can listen instead of reading.

Does Sverige i fokus cost anything?

No. Both the PDF and the audio versions are completely free to download from uhr.se.

Is reading Sverige i fokus enough to pass the test?

The test questions are based on the material, so it is the most important source. But passive reading is rarely enough. Practising actively with questions in the test format, finding your gaps and going back over them is what usually makes the difference. Practice material from anyone other than UHR is, however, not quality-checked by UHR.

Is Sverige i fokus the same thing as SverigeFokus?

No. Sverige i fokus is UHR's official study material. SverigeFokus (we who run this blog and the Bli Svensk app) is an independent study material built around UHR's material. We are not an authority and are not connected to UHR.
