The Swedish citizenship test: registration, venue and practical details

Updated 1 October 2026: The August test has taken place: 875 people wrote it on 15 August at Stockholmsmässan in Älvsjö. The results are published at the end of October, a retake is confirmed for those who fail, and tests held in 2027 cost 2,000 SEK. The date and place of the next sitting have not been published. The sections on registration and the test day below describe how it worked in August; for a future test, the notice to attend is what applies.

The first citizenship test was written on 15 August 2026 in Stockholm. It is a knowledge test used to meet the new requirement of basic knowledge about Swedish society, a requirement introduced into the Citizenship Act on 6 June 2026.

This article collects what the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) and Migrationsverket have actually published so far. Since much is still not public, we mark clearly what is confirmed and what is not yet.

Bli Svensk is an independent study material. For official, always up-to-date information about the test, go to uhr.se/medborgarskapsprovet. For information about applying for citizenship, go to migrationsverket.se.

Who may take the test?

It is Migrationsverket that decides who may take the test, not UHR. You can only register if you have received a letter from Migrationsverket saying that you may. The letter also describes what the new requirements mean in your case.

Keep two things in mind:

For questions about your citizenship case, contact Migrationsverket. For questions about the test itself, contact UHR.

Registration for the August test

Registration opened on 8 June 2026 and closed on 2 July. Places were limited and were allocated in the order the registrations came in. Those who registered received their notice to attend (kallelse) about a week before the test, in their registration account.

No registration window for the next sitting has been announced. UHR writes that the announcement about the next sitting will come on uhr.se during the autumn. We collect everything confirmed in The next Swedish citizenship test date.

What does the test cost?

The August 2026 test was free of charge. It was a so-called trial test (utprövningsprov), which means it was the first time the test questions were used for real.

Tests held in 2027 cost 2,000 SEK, according to section 6 of the ordinance on citizenship tests. More in The citizenship test fee is confirmed: 2,000 SEK from 2027.

Where was the test held?

The August test was held at Stockholmsmässan in Älvsjö, south of Stockholm. UHR recommended public transport: it takes about 10 minutes by commuter train from Stockholm C to Älvsjö.

Where future tests will be held has not been decided. According to its report to the government, UHR plans to expand the test in 2027 with more test takers and more test venues, but there is no finished plan yet for locations and premises.

The times on the test day in August

The actual test time was 90 minutes.

What language is the test in?

Only Swedish. There was no translation into home languages at the August test. The format was about 60 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, on paper: see UHR publishes the test format: 60 questions, 90 minutes, only in Swedish.

UHR had also said there would be generous time at the test, both in total and per question, because it was a trial test.

What did the August test cover?

The August test checked basic knowledge about Swedish society. It covered the same areas as UHR’s study material: 13 chapters on Sweden’s geography, democracy, laws, labour market, welfare, history, international relations, religion and traditions.

A test in Swedish is a separate part to be introduced later. On 30 September 2026, UHR recommended introducing the test in reading and listening comprehension in autumn 2029, but the government has not decided. More in The language test for citizenship.

Adjustments

Before the August test, UHR stated that some adjustments would be offered. What applies at future sittings will be announced on UHR’s page about the test.

What you could bring to the August test

UHR published the test-day information at uhr.se/medborgarskapsprovet/provdagen. For the August test, the rules were:

At the test venue you could have pens and erasers (available on site for those without their own) and simple earplugs from a pharmacy, shown to the invigilator.

Banned in the test room: mobile phones, smartwatches, digital watches and other electronic equipment, headphones, and food and drink (exceptions could be made for medical reasons, for example diabetes).

For a future test, the notice to attend is what applies.

Do you lose points for wrong answers?

No. UHR’s own tips for the test day say you should dare to guess, since wrong answers carry no negative marks. So leave no question unanswered: skip hard questions, go back at the end, and guess rather than leave a blank.

When do you get the result?

The results of the August test are published at the end of October 2026. UHR writes: “Resultatet publiceras i slutet av oktober. Information om vilket datum resultatet publiceras kommer.” (The result is published at the end of October. Information about the date the result is published will follow.) The result appears in your account at medborgarskapsprovet.uhr.se and is passed on automatically to Migrationsverket, so you do not need to send in anything yourself. More in When will the results come?

What happens if I fail?

Those who fail the August test may retake it. Andreas Sandberg, head of unit at UHR, told Universitetsläraren on 21 September 2026: “Är du inte godkänd kommer det den här gången bli möjligt att göra ett omprov.” (If you do not pass, this time it will be possible to retake the test.) The date and format have not been decided. For future sittings, Migrationsverket says there are no decisions on retakes. See Can you retake the Swedish citizenship test?

For your own citizenship case, UHR refers you to Migrationsverket. Migrationsverket’s letter to you describes what happens in your case, and remember that the knowledge requirement can be met in other ways than through the test.
