Short answer

About 60 questions, according to the format UHR published on 22 May 2026. They are multiple-choice questions with four options, of which one is correct.

Update 1 October 2026: The test was written on 15 August by 875 people, and the results are published at the end of October. The format below applied to the August test: UHR has not published the test time and number of questions for the next sitting. On 22 May 2026, the Swedish Council for Higher Education (Universitets- och högskolerådet, UHR) updated its page about the citizenship test and published, for the first time, the practical format of the August test. Until then the number of questions, the test time and the exact design had been unclear; now they no longer are.

This article collects exactly what UHR has confirmed at uhr.se/medborgarskapsprovet/om-medborgarskapsprovet and clearly flags what has still not been made public.

Bli Svensk is an independent study material. For official information about the test, always go to uhr.se/medborgarskapsprovet. For information about applying for citizenship, see migrationsverket.se.

This is now confirmed

UHR describes the format in five concrete points:

It is a trial test (utprövningsprov), which UHR stresses means two things: the questions are used for real for the first time, and there will be generous time at the test, both in total and per question.

What it means in practice

Sixty questions in 90 minutes is about 1 minute and 30 seconds per question if you simply divide, but UHR has said the time margin is generous. The pace itself is not what will decide the result.

Four options with one correct means that the probability of guessing right is in theory 25 percent per question. That says nothing about where the pass mark will lie, which UHR has not published, but it says something about how the questions are built: no true-or-false questions, no questions with several correct answers, no open answers.

On paper, with a pen means the test day is not an app test. You mark your answers by hand. Bring a blue or black pen and valid ID; UHR will publish the exact instructions closer to the test day.

Only Swedish is worth dwelling on. UHR has been clear: there is no translation. The questions are in Swedish, the options are in Swedish. You need to be able to read and understand Swedish to pass the test, even though it is a test of knowledge about society and not a language test.

This has still not been made public

Filling the gaps with assumptions quickly becomes misleading. This is what UHR has not yet published:

We do not speculate about figures or dates that have not been published. When UHR updates, we update this text.

Sample questions: coming

UHR has stated that it will publish sample test questions in good time before the test day. When it does, we will link straight to the source here.

Three things to focus on in your preparation

Given what we now know about the format, three things stand out as the most sensible use of your time:

1. Read UHR’s own study material. UHR has published the official study material, Sverige i fokus, 14 chapters, free, as a PDF and as mp3 audio files. Every test question is based on that material. This is the source, not a third-party summary.

2. Practise in multiple-choice format. Since every question is multiple choice with four options, that is the type of practice that matches the test best. Reading chapters and nodding along is rarely enough: you need to actively choose answers and see why the wrong ones are wrong.

3. Get used to neutral, civic Swedish. The material uses the Swedish of public authorities, not everyday Swedish and not literary Swedish. If you are newer to the country, it can help to read the material aloud or listen to the mp3 version alongside.
