The Swedish citizenship test on 15 August 2026: the test day, the results and what happens next
Short answer
The first sitting was on Saturday 15 August 2026 at Stockholmsmässan in Älvsjö. No date for the next sitting has been published. UHR writes that the announcement will come on uhr.se during the autumn.
Sweden’s first citizenship test was written on Saturday 15 August 2026 at Stockholmsmässan in Älvsjö. This page collects what is confirmed about the test day and about what happens afterwards, and it is updated as new information arrives. Where something has not been published, we say so, instead of guessing.
Updated 1 October 2026: UHR’s page says that the results are published at the end of October, not just “in October” as we quoted earlier, and UHR’s report to the government on 30 September points to the second half of October. No exact date has been published yet. The fee for future tests has meanwhile been confirmed at 2,000 SEK for tests held in 2027, while the date and place of the next sitting are still missing.
The results come at the end of October
The results are published at the end of October 2026. UHR first wrote only “during the autumn” but has since been more specific: “Resultatet publiceras i slutet av oktober. Information om vilket datum resultatet publiceras kommer.” (The result is published at the end of October. Information about the date the result is published will follow.) So the date has still not been set. The wait comes from the test being a trial test: the difficulty of the questions has to be analysed before the results can be set. According to UHR’s report to the government on 30 September, 875 people took the test, and the University of Gothenburg is now analysing and standard-setting the answers.
If you took the test on 15 August, the result will appear in your account at medborgarskapsprovet.uhr.se, the portal that opened this summer, and is passed on automatically to Migrationsverket. So you do not need to send in any proof yourself, and you do not need to contact either authority to speed it up.
The marking is done by machine. Alli Klapp, head of the Department of Education and Special Education at the University of Gothenburg, told Universitetsläraren on 21 September 2026: “Rättningen sker automatiskt och resultatet beräknas vara färdigt under oktober och skickas då från UHR till Migrationsverket.” (The marking is automatic, and the result is expected to be ready during October and will then be sent from UHR to Migrationsverket.) More on the timeline in When will the results come?
The pass mark has still not been published
This is the most common question we get, and the honest answer is that nobody outside UHR knows.
You will find sites that say 70 percent, or 80 percent, or 42 out of 60. None of those figures is confirmed by UHR. Our own app uses a placeholder threshold precisely because a threshold is needed to show a result, and we say that it is a placeholder. Treat any site that states an exact threshold without saying where it comes from as unreliable, however official it looks.
That the threshold is unpublished is itself logical for a trial test. How hard the questions actually turned out to be is something UHR only knows after the answers have been analysed, and that is presumably part of the same work that makes the results take until October.
The test day, in brief
The test was a trial test, that is, the very first sitting, and it was free. Registration opened on 8 June with 2 July as the last day, places were limited, and only those who had received a letter of referral from Migrationsverket could register.
The format had been confirmed since May: about 60 questions in 90 minutes, four options per question of which one is correct, on paper and only in Swedish. No dictionary, no aids. That came to about one and a half minutes per question, which is plenty of time for someone who recognises the question and hardly any time at all for someone who has to reason their way to the answer.
The doors at Stockholmsmässan opened at 08:15 and the test was written in the morning. The practical details were in the notice to attend (kallelsen), and the notice was what applied above everything else, including this page.
About the made-up test questions
On 17 July 2026 the news agency TT reported, in newspapers from Göteborgs-Posten to Nya Wermlands-Tidningen, that made-up test questions were circulating ahead of the test. Some sellers offered packages of over a thousand questions. UHR’s press secretary Dani Backteg said in the article that the authority finds it unfortunate if people go to other websites, read up and believe it is official information.
The problem did not go away with the August test. Demand ahead of the next sitting is at least as great, and it is worth being clear about where we stand ourselves, since we are a third party too:
Nobody outside UHR has seen the test questions. Not us, not any other app, not any site selling question packages. Every practice question you can buy or download is someone’s interpretation of what might come up, nothing more.
There is, however, an official material. UHR’s Sverige i fokus is free, is on uhr.se and is what the test questions are based on. Everything else, our material included, is practice material built on top of it.
How to recognise what is official. Official information about the test is on uhr.se and medborgarskapsprovet.uhr.se, and information about your citizenship case is with Migrationsverket. A site that claims to have “the real questions”, that states a pass mark without a source, or that charges for what UHR gives away free, is not official, however it looks.
Our own practice questions are based on UHR’s material, and we say plainly that they are not the test’s questions. If you want to see where you stand, you can take our anonymous test in the style of the exam (in Swedish, like the real test) for free, without an account, in about five minutes.
Will there be more sittings?
Yes, the test is to be given regularly. The date and place of the next sitting are still unpublished, and in September UHR confirmed that there is not even a finished plan for where future tests will be held. UHR writes that the announcement of dates will come on uhr.se during the autumn. The price, on the other hand, has been settled since September: 2,000 SEK for tests held in 2027, according to the ordinance on citizenship tests. The August test was free precisely because it was the first. We collect everything confirmed about the next sitting in The next Swedish citizenship test date. What applies to those who do not pass has partly become clear: a retake is confirmed for the August test specifically, while Migrationsverket says there are no decisions on retakes for future sittings. See Can you retake the Swedish citizenship test?
What you can do now
If you took the test on 15 August, there is really nothing you need to do until the result comes at the end of October. It is passed on to Migrationsverket automatically. If the result is a fail, UHR refers you to Migrationsverket for what applies in your case, and that is also where the question belongs.
If you did not take the test, there is no rush, but it is not the moment to wait for a date before you start either. The registration window in June was short, and if the next one is just as short, someone who only starts studying when the date comes will not get very far. Our walkthrough of what you need to know and our sample questions are both based on UHR’s material.
Check whether you need the test at all. The knowledge requirement can be met in other ways than through a test, for example with school grades. We have written about it in Meet the knowledge requirement without the citizenship test.

Frequently asked questions
When was the first citizenship test held, and when is the next one?
The first sitting was on Saturday 15 August 2026 at Stockholmsmässan in Älvsjö. No date for the next sitting has been published. UHR writes that the announcement will come on uhr.se during the autumn.
When will the citizenship test results come?
UHR writes that the results will be published at the end of October 2026. The exact date has not been published yet. The result will appear in your account at medborgarskapsprovet.uhr.se and is passed on to Migrationsverket, so you do not need to send it in yourself.
How many correct answers do you need to pass the citizenship test?
Nobody outside UHR knows. The pass mark has not been published. Figures such as 70 or 80 percent appear on third-party sites, but they are guesses and not confirmed by UHR. Be careful with any site that states an exact threshold as if it were official.
Will UHR publish the real test questions afterwards?
UHR has said nothing about it. Since the August test was a trial test, in which the questions were tried out so that they can be reused, there are reasons against publishing the whole test. We will update this page if UHR announces anything.
Why are made-up test questions circulating?
Nobody outside UHR has seen the test questions, but demand is high, so made-up question sets are spread and sold. The news agency TT reported on it on 17 July 2026. UHR's press secretary Dani Backteg said then that the authority finds it unfortunate if people read up on other websites and believe it is official information.
Will there be more sittings after 15 August?
Yes, the test is to be given regularly. The date and place of the next sitting have not been published, but the fee is confirmed at 2,000 SEK for tests held in 2027. The August test was free because it was the first.
