Short answer

At the earliest two months before your current permit stops being valid, and always before it has stopped being valid. If you study at a university or are a doctoral student, you can apply at the earliest four months before.

A residence permit in Sweden is usually valid for a limited time. If you want to stay longer you must apply to extend it, and the timing matters. Apply too early and you can’t, and apply too late and you may lose the right to work while you wait, or be refused.

Here we go through the rules for the most common permits: work, family, studies and protection. Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency) assesses your application. We checked the rules on Migrationsverket’s own pages on 10 October 2026.

The main rule: at the earliest two months before

The same rule applies to work permits, permits to live with someone in Sweden and permits on the grounds of protection: you can apply to extend at the earliest two months before your current permit stops being valid, and you must apply before it has stopped being valid.

If you study at a university, or you are a doctoral student, you can apply at the earliest four months before. Here too you must apply before your permit stops being valid.

If you have a permit on the grounds of protection, the e-service only opens two months before. That is when you can log in and apply.

The card’s last day of validity is on the front of your residence permit card. The card is valid as long as your permit, but for at most three years. If you have a longer permit, check the date in your decision. Enter the last day your permit is valid in our Permit timeline tool, and it works out from which day you can apply and can add reminders to your calendar.

Work permits: your part must be in too

For a work permit, your employer starts the extension in Migrationsverket’s e-service. You then get an email with a link, fill in your part, check the terms and attach the documents.

The important part: your application must be registered with Migrationsverket before your permit stops being valid. It is not enough that your employer has filled in their part. So start in good time, to leave room to fill in, attach and pay.

The fee for an employee is SEK 2,200. You do not get the fee back if you are refused.

From 2 December 2026 the new salary requirement also applies to all extensions: your pay must be at least 90 percent of the median wage, currently SEK 34,470 a month. Read more in Work permit salary requirement 2026.

If you apply in time

If you have had a work permit for six months or more and applied before it stopped being valid, you may keep working while you wait for a decision. If you have had a work permit for less than six months, you may not work while you wait.

If you change jobs while you wait, and applied in time, you can start your new job. Then send your new employment contract to Migrationsverket.

Think about travel. If you need a visa to enter Sweden, it can be hard to come back while you wait, because you need a valid permit to enter. You may have to stay abroad until you get the decision. In special situations, such as a sudden illness or a death in the family, you can apply for a national visa (D visa).

If you apply too late

If you apply after your permit has stopped being valid:

That is why it is better to apply early in the window than in the last week.

Frequently asked questions

When can I apply to extend my residence permit?

At the earliest two months before your current permit stops being valid, and always before it has stopped being valid. If you study at a university or are a doctoral student, you can apply at the earliest four months before.

What happens if I apply too late?

If your permit has already stopped being valid, you may not work while you wait for a decision, you risk losing some social benefits, and you may be refused because you have been in Sweden without a valid permit.

Can I work while I wait for a decision on my extension?

Yes, if you have had a work permit for six months or more and applied before your permit stopped being valid. If you have had a work permit for less than six months, you may not work while you wait.

Is it enough that my employer has filled in their part of the application?

No. Your employer starts the application in Migrationsverket's e-service, but your application must be registered with Migrationsverket before your permit stops being valid. It is not enough that your employer has filled in their part.
